PURPOSE OF POSTION Performs inspecting or overseeing the inspection of various plants, buildings, and establishments for proper sanitation; preparing reports of findings; and promoting public education on sanitary practices. environmental and consumer health duties to protect the public from food-borne diseases, vector-borne diseases and environmental public health hazards. Provides Code Enforcement activities and assists in educating citizens as well as business owners in preventing public health hazards. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Work involves inspecting and/or overseeing the inspection of various plants, buildings, and establishments for proper sanitation; preparing reports of findings; and promoting public education on sanitary practices. Performs environmental sanitation inspection work. Conducts required technical equipment tests on inspection gear as needed. Collects samples of foods or environment specimens to submit to appropriate laboratories for analysis as needed. Conducts training activities to include training, and field evaluations of permitted facilities. Conducts special investigations as necessary to support epidemiology department or emergency preparedness efforts. Investigates complaints and responds to public requests for information and inquiries related to permitted facilities or illegally operating facilities. Uses initiative and independent judgment to take regulatory action when necessary. Prepares and submits required reports and documentation in a timely manner. Employee actively participates and/or serves in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations in response and/or recovery in Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor’s degree in public health, food and nutrition, or a natural, basic, environmental, animal science or other science discipline with at least 30 semester hours. Required to qualify to take the State Registered Sanitarian test prior to hiring (Sanitarian In Training SIT) or currently registered as a Registered Professional Sanitarian in Texas.
