PURPOSE OF POSITION
Performs environmental and consumer health duties to protect the public from food-borne diseases, vector-borne diseases and environmental public health hazards. Provides Code Enforcement activities and assists in educating citizens as well as business owners in preventing public health hazards.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Performs inspections in an assigned geographic area for food establishments per public health laws. Responds to disaster type problems that jeopardize food and water sources. Assists in conducting Food Handlers Certification Classes. Works public health environmental complaints. Performs sanitation inspections of child care facilities, public and private school facilities, and hotel/motel surveys. Performs inspections on public swimming pools. Maintains records on all work performed. Provides concise verbal and written reports. General knowledge of basic sciences to understand general environmental problems and sanitation and the ability to comprehend and enforce the state, county, and city regulations concerning food service, insect/rodent control, septic systems, and general environmental sanitation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s Degree with thirty (30) hours of basic science (biology, chemistry, geology, physics) and or applied science. Required to qualify to take the State Registered Sanitarian test prior to hiring (Sanitarian In Training SIT) or currently registered as a Registered Professional Sanitarian in Texas.
