FUNCTION:
Responsible for assessing, screening, counseling, and training WIC participants and the local community on matters pertaining to nutrition and the WIC Program, Responsible for overseeing administrative duties as assigned by the Director.
SCOPE:
• Determines program eligibility.
• Provides nutrition counseling and education, including high risk counseling.
• Performs screening procedures.
• Provides nutrition in-services.
• Performs outreach activities.
• Performs computer-oriented tasks.
• Acts as primary contact for dietetic interns. Oversees special projects, as needed.
MAJOR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Completes nutritional assessments.
• Records required information accurately.
• Performs individual counseling.
• Prescribes supplemental food packages.
• Documents correct Nutrition Education/Individual Counseling Codes.
• Teaches nutrition education classes.
• Registered Dietitian will complete/approval special formulas as needed.
• Registered Dietitian will provide High Risk counseling as needed.
• Acts as the covering Nutritionist when needed.
• Acts as the primary contact for dietetic interns.
TASK ASSIGNMENTS:
• Accurately grades growth chart, diet recall, and health history to determine eligibility.
• Records results on assessment sheet documenting correct counseling and food codes.
• Inform participants of reasons for eligibility and counsels on nutritional needs.
• Follows approved nutrition education schedule, follows written nutrition education modules, asks questions, reviews main concepts, gives correct answers, uses visual aids, and gives an evaluation.
• Performs site visits among the clinics to ensure the flow is functioning properly.
• Act as the covering Nutritionist among the agency as needed and when coverage is mandatory.
• Coordinates the schedules, sites, hours, & RD preceptors for the dietetic interns.
• Performs follow up with interns, including their progress on the accrual hours and their special projects.
• Oversees special projects as assigned by the WIC Director and Assistant WIC Director. Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED TO PERFORM IN THIS POSITION:
• Registered Dietitian shall provide high risk counseling as needed.
• Registered Dietitian will respond to requests for information and assistance from the community and individuals.
• Provides assistance, education, advice, and referrals for those who visit or phone the WIC Program.
• Coordinates services with initiates referrals to and accepts referrals from other providers and other Health District programs.
• Functions as team leader in the absence of supervisor and makes decisions including but not limited to clinical/scheduling matters.
• Consults with supervisor on "uncommon requests" and follows his/her recommendation. Participates in community health promotion efforts through teaching and counseling community groups.
• Provides appropriate documentation.
• Documents accordingly when services are provided.
• Records in a clear, concise, objective manner.
• Reviews charts at end of clinic to ensure all recordings are complete and signed.
• Participates in record audit process as requested-
• Communicates clearly, if not bilingual obtains assistance of bilingual person for interpretation.
• Has considerable knowledge of the field of nutrition as it relates to maternal and child health. Spanish speaking is highly desirable.
EDUCATION:
Bachelor's degree in Food and Nutrition or related field with a minimum of 12 hours in Food and Nutrition.

• May be exposed to communicable diseases.
• Must be fully immunized within 90 days of employment and show proof thereof.
• Must be able to spend six to eight hours walking and standing and/or sitting.
• Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds and stretch to reach files.
